BASIC OVERVIEW OF DIE
INSTALLATION
Improper installation is one of the major causes of die failure. Untrained personnel should never attempt it. The press, the die, and all mounting devices should be inspected prior to installation. Any press operator viewing an unsafe installation should shut down immediately. Wear safety glasses during installation.
Wipe off any grease, slivers, or slugs from
the die area of the press, and the top/bottom of the die set.
Lightly file and stone these surfaces to
remove any nicks or protrusions.
Place the die set in the press. Stop the press at the bottom of its stroke,
just above the top shoe. Turn off power
to press & lock out!!
Bolt top shoe to ram. Tighten bolts from the ram to the top
shoe. If possible, don’t use a
stem. Try never to use a sub-pressed
die (one that does not bolt to the ram).
Bolt or toe clamp bottom shoe to bolster
plate. Watch that the bottom die set
clamps down evenly. Tighten Bolts.
With everything tight, run the die through
the entire stroke manually. Listen
& watch for anything out of the ordinary.
Adjust if need be.
Check that slug flow has not been
interfered. Adjust shut height and lock
into position to just above the height stop.
